Leader Training

Training is offered through the Potawatomi Trails District. While our district would be the primary trainer, any training offered by the other districts within the Three Fires Council is acceptable. The training calendars can be found at www.threefirescouncil.org under the training section.

Initial Training

New Scoutmaster Leaders need to take four training classes.  Three can be taken on line at the BSA website, www.scouting.org under the “volunteer” and then "training" tab. They are: (1) Fast Star Orientation; (2) Youth Protection; and (3) This is Scouting. The fourth course, Scoutmaster Leader and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader-Specific Training, is typically offered one evening in the fall at a local church or school.

After completing these courses, registered leaders may wear the “trained” strip on their uniform.

Before doing the online training through the BSA website, you must first register. The website then keeps track of what training you have completed, have done partially, or still need to complete. It also allows you to print out a training certificate once you have completed the training. You should give a copy of the certificate to the pack training coordinator.
