USS Silversides Outing Recap

Posted by Marc Velasco on Dec 7, 2014

Troop 82 visits the USS Silversides!

A hearty band of Troop 82 scouts and leaders recently ventured to Muskegon, Michigan for a visit to national landmark – WW II submarine the USS Silversides.

After a 3.5 hour drive north, the group arrived at the sub museum at 5:40 local time, which allowed them a chance to check in and get settled before the 6:00pm opening.

Scouts and leaders first explored the museum, learning about the USS Silversides, subs and WW II in general. They then enjoyed a pizza dinner, after which the boys explored another ship, theCoast Guard cutter US CGC McLane.

Their tour of the sub began at 8:15 and the scouts were entranced as their tour guide provided details about the sub and its crew. After the tour, the boys roamed the sub, played cards or board games, and enjoyed their "private" sleeping quarters in the forward torpedo room.

The sub's alarm awoke the crew at 7:45. Everyone enjoyed a light breakfast, checked out the gift shop, removed their gear and hit the road by 9:45 Michigan time.

Everyone had a great adventure, and all received a USS Silversides patch and Honorary Crew Member certificate.

Thanks to leaders Mr. Braun, Mr. FabriziusMr. Rodgers and Mr. Weiler who helped make the trip a success.
