The USS Cobia

Posted by Paul Rodgers on Mar 8, 2020

The outing to the USS Cobia went very well.  Nolan M. was the SPL for the weekend.  Seth W. was the Grub Master.  We left Elmhurst on time and stopped for dinner at Culver's in Milwaukee.  We arrived in Manitowoc just at 7:20 pm with the doors opening at 7:30pm.  The boys moved their stuff into the museum and we proceed to enter “basic training” with the tour guides for the evening.  The tour guides were very good at running the sub with the boys as the crew. The boys actually got to operate the valves, buzzers and wheels on the sub.  The tour guides gave an excellent tour of the sub and answered many questions from/for the scouts.  After a course on Morse Code, we returned to the museum for the crackle barrel.  A good snack was had and we cleaned up appropriately.  We then got our stuff and moved into the sleeping quarters, bunking with another cub scout troop from Illinois.

The tour guides woke us at 7:00 am, after losing an hour sleep due to day light savings time adjustment.  They blew a horn and called general quarters.  We then went inside to the museum and had a breakfast of cereal and doughnuts, orange juice and water.  We toured the museum for about an hour + then hit the road for home.

Thanks again to Mr. Carry, Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Witzel as acting adult leaders and making this trip possible.
